Senior Pastor


Menlo Church is a “Jesus church,” that finds its life, health, vision, and strength in the person of Jesus Christ, working to keep Jesus at the center of faith and life together. As a multi-site church, Menlo is one church in many locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. The next Senior Pastor of Menlo Church will have the privilege of leading a gifted staff, dedicated Session, and diverse congregation into a new season of spiritual healing and growth.




THE CHURCH

Menlo Church has a rich history that dates back to 1873. The church has gone through a number of significant transitions over the years and has reinvented how it performs ministry to adapt to the continually changing needs of its congregation. All the while, they have been faithful to its traditions and core values while remaining open to change and innovation. Beginning in 2007, the church embarked on a multi-site strategy, adding additional campus locations on the San Francisco Peninsula. In 2014, the church voted to change its denominational membership from PC (USA) to the Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians (ECO).


Seated in the heart of Silicon Valley, Menlo Church has six campuses and is truly one church in many locations throughout the Bay Area. Menlo Church strives to remain distinct yet keep pace with its surrounding culture for the sake of Christ. It seeks to represent the legacy of the past and the hope of the future. The faith journey and discipleship path for congregants is built on a strategy of “Up, In, and Out”: developing a transforming relationship with Jesus (Up), entering authentic community with each other (In), and serving others so that everyone in the Bay Area and beyond can flourish (Out).

Each campus holds multiple worship services each weekend led by their campus worship teams and pastors with a sermon streamed to each site. Each campus reflects the demographics of the neighborhoods in which they are located. In an area that influences the rest of the world with companies such as Apple, Google, Facebook & Twitter, the opportunity for ministry has never been greater. God is using this inspiring and innovative community to reach thousands of people weekly, from all walks of life in the San Francisco Bay Area. Despite living in a diverse culture (racially, economically, philosophically, and politically) that always seems to be in flux, the mission of Menlo Church is steadfast - it exists “to present everyone mature in Christ through learning, belonging, healing, and serving.”



THE POSITION

The Senior Pastor of Menlo Church will be humble and innovative, able to thrive and cast contagious vision in a complex, fast-paced environment. Strong leadership gifts and experience managing a large, complex and diverse staff are key to success in this role.


Embracing a love of Scripture and passion for expository preaching, the next Senior Pastor will lead a team of gifted preachers in bringing the Word to life through dynamic teaching. With the heart of a Shepherd, they will prayerfully and intentionally disciple the congregation through a season of healing into a season of stability and growth.


PASTOR, SHEPHERD

  • Lead the church in living out the Great Commandment as they care for the congregation

  • Lead the church in living out the Great Commission, as they share the love of Jesus and evangelize outside the campus doors

  • Personally lead in the spiritual formation and discipleship of elders and key staff

  • Develop strategy and planning for discipleship and Christian growth for both staff and the congregation


TEACHER, PREACHER

  • Teach scriptural truths through sermons which are effective, inspiring, challenging, intellectually engaging, and culturally relevant

  • Invest in the development and mentoring of teaching pastors

  • Architect the worship experience to provide broad appeal for multiple generations

  • Communicate spiritual practices which connect biblical teaching with pathways for discipleship, resulting in spiritual formation


LEADER, HEAD OF STAFF

  • Lead an organization that is highly complex in multiple dimensions (multiple sites, diversity in cultural and ethnic profile, broad range of biblical grounding, generational differences)

  • Set culture, standards, and expectations for staff

  • Build a high-performing staff team, equipping and multiplying leadership within the church, including staff and lay leaders

  • Encourage a culture of action and experimentation across campuses, and incorporate learnings into the core programs across all campuses

  • Oversee effective & efficient church operations including facilities, finance, HR, administration and communications

  • Marked by a deep, Christ-like humility, with a love for the church that is evidenced by a whole-hearted devotion to service of the church and its people

  • Demonstrates active and growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ, as evidenced by self-awareness, action, attitude, and behavior

  • Displays high level of emotional and relational intelligence

  • Seeks open and trusted accountability from elders and the Leadership Team

  • Prayerfully guided by the Holy Spirit

  • Exudes a personable, warm, and positive attitude

  • Filled with a passion to build community and healthy relationships


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide spiritual direction for Menlo Church while leading congregants and others to “find and follow Jesus”

  • Models being a Jesus follower in community with others

  • Serves, with voice and vote, on the Elder Board to set, cast, and implement the vision and mission

  • Leads across multiple generations with a vision for the next generation, while honoring the traditional church

  • Leads an interconnected, collaborative team

  • Inspires the Leadership Team to unify Menlo Church around a common ministry philosophy


REQUIREMENTS

  • Ordination in the ECO denomination (or commitment to be so ordained within the first two years)

  • Theological graduate degree from an accredited seminary highly desired

  • 10 years relevant ministry experience with 5 years in church leadership and management of staff of 35 or more

  • Experience in a multi-site church setting is strongly preferred

  • Substantial work and/or volunteer experience with diverse people groups and communities
