The Deputy Director is a spiritual leader with strong business acumen, a passion for social justice, a Christ-like heart of compassion and true desire to make a difference in our world.  City on a Hill is celebrating its 20th year of service to the community, and the ministry is poised for great days ahead.  The Deputy Director will be able to build on an amazing 20-year platform of ministry excellence and relationship building.  City on a Hill is truly a light that cannot be hidden and one that uses a collaborative model of service.  In collaboration hope is restored, poverty is reduced, neighborhoods are strengthened, health is improved, and justice is established.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

THE ORGANIZATION

 

City on a Hill is a place of transformation that addresses symptoms, breaks cycles, and engages in long term solutions.  The position of Deputy Director could be the opportunity that you have been praying and waiting for.

At the end of the year 2000, City on a Hill acquired the vacant Good Samaritan hospital facility.  This facility was an entire city block of buildings.  This unprecedented gift returned the hospital property to its original mission of serving the poor as an expression of faith.

In the early days City on a Hill used a method known as Adopt-a-Block to learn the needs of families in the Central City of Milwaukee.  After this beginning City on a Hill has used a listening ear combined with a discerning heart to create programs that improve the lives of those in Milwaukee – young and old alike.

As City on a Hill shines their light into the world, they are meeting health and basic needs, mentoring and developing the lives of youth, and training on justice issues.  This is a place that truly models the words of Jesus:

 

 

 

 

 

THE POSITION

 

The Deputy Director will serve as a mission-focused Spiritual Leader.

The Deputy Director will help to ensure that the programs and services City on a Hill provides remain Christ-centered, with a focus on not only human services but also evangelism and discipleship. They will provide spiritual leadership on a daily basis to the staff teams they lead.

 

The Deputy Director will use business acumen to help the organization thrive.

The support of sound business skills is necessary for effective ministry to occur. An Operations Director is in place to oversee many of the administrative and human resources functions, as well as the training arm of City on a Hill’s ministry, which includes short-term mission trips. The Deputy Director will have sole or shared oversight of certain business and financial functions that help the ministry thrive.

 

The Deputy Director will lead ministry program teams.

The Deputy Director will be the direct supervisor of the youth and family program leaders and the health services manager.  These staff leaders oversee the core ministries that City on a Hill provides to central city youth and adults.  Therefore, the Deputy Director will be an actively involved team leader, setting goals, fostering innovation, and monitoring outcomes to ensure that the ministry is effectively alleviating the symptoms of poverty among adults and equipping young people to break the cycle of poverty.

 

The Deputy Director will grow the ministry’s visibility through networking & public speaking.

The Deputy Director will have opportunities to represent City on a Hill in civic events and will also be called upon to speak in churches statewide.  The importance of these opportunities is to connect donors and volunteers to the ministry of City on a Hill, and to expand the organization’s capacity and reach.

 

The Deputy Director will maintain long-standing relationships and build new ones.

City on a Hill has built strong relationships with foundation officers, pastors, community partners, central city residents and donors throughout its 20-year history. The established reputation of integrity in finance, quality programming, and life-changing relationships is a vital asset of City on a Hill. The Deputy Director will build upon this foundation to form new relationships and partnerships that help to advance the organization in the next decade. 

 

Additionally, the plan is for the Deputy Director to become the next Executive Director if they perform well in this important role.

 

 

 

 

The Deputy Director will be a spiritual leader, possessing a business acumen, and a heart for service. The Deputy Director is a new position at City on Hill.  After 20 years of history the ministry is prepared for its greatest days.  The Deputy Director will enable greater growth, increase and diversify the raising of funds, and work with the Executive Director to oversee the ministries of City on a Hill.  

In the near future the Deputy Director has the opportunity to become the Executive Director of City on a Hill.  Therefore, the right candidate could show themselves faithful as a Deputy Director, while also being trained and prepared to become the Executive Director.  The Deputy Director will be someone who is a visionary, capable representative and quality communicator.  As the Deputy Director who is training for and transitioning to the Executive Director this person will have the opportunity to choose their own replacement in a relatively short time. (2-3 years)

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAITS

 

  • Submission to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and agreement with City on a Hill’s statement of faith.

  • Humble, Teachable

  • Unquestionable integrity in finance, relationships and time management

  • Proven Administrative Ability

  • Entrepreneurial and self-motivated

  • Experience in donor development and fund raising

  • Proven record of dynamic public speaking

  • Able to handle multiple tasks with senior level of responsibility and accountability

  • Aptitude for public relations

  • Experience in strategic planning with a track record of long-term follow-through and success

  • At least 5 years of senior level management experience

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and groups

  • Knowledge of, compassion for, and sensitivity towards ministry to vulnerable populations 

  • A reputation for team building 

  • Strong interpersonal and intra-personal skills 

  • Committed involvement in a local church
