More than 15 years ago Teresa Goines was a correctional officer in Southern California. In this role Teresa noticed many young people who were incarcerated, released, and incarcerated again. This cycle of life on the streets, incarceration, and then back on the street had to be stopped. Teresa was an unlikely person to offer a solution simply because at five feet two inches tall and long blonde hair she simply did not fit the prototype of a correctional officer or one who would start a ministry in a difficult neighborhood.
Teresa began to look for a way to invest in the lives of young people, and to see the cycle of poverty, crime, hopelessness, and incarceration broken. Through this search, the idea of Old Skool Café was born.
Teresa began this ministry because she knew that young people needed to discover a Christ centered life, they needed a mentor, and they needed a way to learn job skills. Why a restaurant? The platform of a restaurant allows many different people to easily experience the ministry, and the job skills could be used in any city, with no college degree required. Teresa Goines truly had a God idea. The impact that Teresa has made has resulted in her being named as a CNN Person of the Year, and thousands of kids and their family’s live have been changed.
